Lewis “Steve” Stiltner started this agency in 1997. American Family Insurance was started by Herman Wittwer, a struggling insurance salesman who dreamed of selling auto insurance to Wisconsin farmers. Confident he had a good idea, Herman opened Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in 1927. Our company's name changed in 1963 to American Family Mutual Insurance Company.
